Retasking old propane tanks?

Am thinking of using a pair of 5-gal propane tanks for accumulators. If I can't find used ones in decent shape I figured I'd buy new ones (they're cheap) and unscrew the plumbing from the top end. I've seen how those suckers are built and I'm wondering how much of a PITA it is to get the valve off. Anyone been there/done that?

Lots of leverage. A huge wrench and a tank holder (or your rigged up equivilant). Look for old tanks on craigs list and advertise on craigs list for them. I actually have a hook up at the dump that saves them for me. They are considered hazmat and can't be buried so they call me when they get the sizes I need. Check your local landfill.

If you are planning on just buying a new tank you should consider investing in an OPD Valve Wrench. I recently bought one and it worked great for removing the valve. All you need to do is secure the tank down (or use a little counter force) and this little puppy does all the rest (well, almost... it takes a bit of strength!)

that wrench is cool, but a good ol crescent wrench ,a breaker bar, big truck tie down and any tank valve (even on high pressure tanks) comes right off.

yup... the first one I did left me in a sweat, the second was easy once I knew I needed a long piece of pipe on the wrench....

I've started using box tube instead of pipe because it doesn't slide off the wrench as easily. But yeah. Get about 3-4 feet of leverage, and use strapping wrapped directionally against your pull to hold the tank still.

Thought I would throw in my .02 cents to give back a little to the community for all the great help I've received so far! Thanks to Sam for the tip I turned the tank while holding the valve instead of trying to hold the tank and turning the valve. There was a chunk of box tube around that I clamped to a work table, then wrapped a strap around the tank and securing it to the top valve collar and the bottom base then used a 4' section of pipe tucked into the strap. I should have taken a picture, but if you think about it, it should make sense. I expected it to be harder to get the valve off.

Buy the new tank. I've had several valves taken out by the propane company when they refill my tanks. Sometimes I tip them couple of dollars. I'm not as young as some of you. I've done it the hard way before. Takes me a couple of days to get over a busted knuckle.
