When usign fire entinguisher cylinders as propane accumulators, is there a difference in pressure rating on the aluminum cylinders vs. the three piece welded steel cylinders? Run-of-the-mill Badger 14abc dry powder units are relatively easy to come by. are they safe at unregulated pressure?

Re: fire extinguisher accumulaor question
Mon, March 6, 2006 - 4:43 PMcheck the max operating pressure. propanes working pressure is 300psi and can expand to up to potentialy 600 psi so propane cylenders start to distort around 1200psi and iminent explostion soon after.
generaly speaking, alluminum if used sould be very, very closely scrutinised. as a general guidline alluminum sould only be used for short duration or light duty aplications. an other wise safe bet for accumulators is the standard 5 to 10 lb co2 fire extinguisher, or just another propane tank with a standard fitting threaded into the discharge tap on top.
good luck.

Re: fire extinguisher accumulaor question
Mon, March 6, 2006 - 6:36 PMIf the cylinder is rated for 350# or better it will work for an accumulator. The down side of using a fire bottle is the unusual threads at the top. You will have to make an adapter to connect to pipe threads. Bonefire Bob uses aluminum cylinders and has never had a problem. -

Re: fire extinguisher accumulaor question
Tue, March 7, 2006 - 8:36 AMWe use dead scuba tanks. By dead I mean they cannot be used for scuba which is usually presurised to arround 1300 PSI. This means that they are rated for much more than that and will exceed your accumulator/plenum needs. The threads are standard I believe and you can porbably got them pretty cheep form scuba shops.
I am amazed at the returns from small accumulators. We build the fire hat out of two 12oz CO2 containers (paintball suppliers)in a manafild and they pack quite the flame effect. See the pictures in the gallery. :) -

Tue, March 7, 2006 - 9:36 AMCome to think of it I do have a couple of CO2 paintball cylinders hanging around. And those are way beyond any pressure developed by propane.

Re: fire extinguisher accumulaor question
Thu, September 17, 2009 - 2:53 PMI have just picked up some used 20lb fire extinguisher bottles. The open is between 3/4 and 1, is it metric? Just exactly what thread do they have on them and where can I purchase an adapter for them? I have never tried to thread aluminum before...can they be re-threaded to standard 1"? Any help is appreciated.

They have aluminum cylinders rated waaaay better than you need and their prices are reasonable. Bought 4 for my art car project a while back.
