Managed to get prototype working on compressed air: www.youtube.com/watch
Next up: gotta concentrate on making it more robust. Already have explosion-proof solenoid valves but need to think a little about style. Any links to other fire calliopes appreciated.

--One of my inspirations. Every time I've seen it, it has been out of commission for some reason. I opted for reliability so I'm making my own, heh.

"...been out of commison"...I had to wait 3 yrs...finally saw it go after the temple burn. It was incredible. how's your going?

Well it's running on air and it's playing tunes from RTTTL files. Next up: gotta think a little about design; the prototype is *ugly*!! Once I've decided on a design I'll get to assembling; I've already got the whistles about half-fabricated.

--Don't think I've posted this one to this tribe yet; got version #4 working at last. Still gotta do a pile of stuff but methinks the worst is over.. www.youtube.com/watch
Next up: make it presentable for Makers Faire, then I'll switch from compressed air to propane.

Hey Ed - if you need some 12V propane rated valves, surplus center has these:

Kewl; thanks! Internal passage diameter is the critical dimension; will get one just to try it out.

--Finally took one of my solenoid valves apart today and had a look at the individual components within. Then I had a talk with an engineer at Parker to find out the effects I could expect if I remachine one a bit. Taking the valve apart it's apparent that the greatest restriction is a tiny hole, maybe 1/16" dia that seats a pointed plunger. The plunger is the thing that's pulled up by the solenoid. After some discussion I've decided that the thing to do is to drill out the orifice a bit, increase the diameter of the moving slug pointy thing, increase the diameter of the sleeve it slides in, increase the dia of the spring that returns it to its seat, put it all together and see what happens. The goal is to lower the manifold pressure to maybe 40psi, which would make the use of propane much easier to engineer and which would make the air compressor less of a nuisance at events like Maker Faire.
--Plan B is to get a new valve. They've got 'em with as much as 1/4" bore thru with a 1/4" pipe connection which would connect to my existing manifold without modification, but they cost $40.- apiece. I want to avoid the 'more money' scenario if I can, heh.

If you can afford a $15 inverter, these valves flow like crazy for 1/4" pipe units,
                    and they're $13 apiece:

I have these on RoboShaw for several years w/o problems.

Folks I've talked to say AC just doesn't work for 'organ pipes' and that I should switch to DC. I suppose that, assuming the internal passages are adequate, I could always change the coils, yes?
